THERE’S MORE TO MOTHERHOOD THAN LOADS OF LAUNDRY
Biblical inspiration for some of motherhood’s greatest struggles
Jen Hatmaker helps us realize we are not alone. Sometimes I think people get the impresson that everyones life if perfect but our own. A real look at what life is like when we have kids. Lots of encouraging bits of scripture and experiences so that we no longer feel powerless. Everyone experiences the overwhelmed and lost feelings at some point, and that’s ok. Pick yourself up and stand on scripture to feel in control again, and realize you are not alone.
Life for mothers often feels like a balancing act. During these years, top priorities like raising godly children and tending your own spiritual health can seem sidelined by daily demands of diaper changes and mounting loads of laundry. It’s never quite as simple as it seems it would be. What’s a mom to do?
“I remember feeling panicky and desperate, overwhelmed and lost,” remembers author and speaker Jen Hatmaker about life as a new mother. “My romantic notion of motherhood was hijacked by such delights as breast pumps, sitz baths, and hemorrhoids. When I try to remember my deep thought life during that season, there is only a black hole of diapers, schedules and Elmo. There were so many elements of parenting I was unaware of when I signed up for it.”
The mother of three kids, now in their elementary and middle school years, Hatmaker learned many lessons along the way about motherhood. Whether it’s handling the stress of an ever-growing to-do list, feeling like you’ve lost your identity or just wishing God was closer during the times of teething and temper tantrums, Hatmaker found the answers in the teachings of Jesus.
She shares these insights in her book Out of the Spin Cycle: Devotions to Lighten Your Mother Load. This refreshing and encouraging collection of 40 devotions helps mothers connect the words and deeds of Jesus to the everyday struggles of their own lives. Along with her own laugh-out-loud tales of rearing small children, keen biblical wisdom and the eye of an understanding mom, Hatmaker helps shepherd mothers through the terrain of this new chapter in their lives through these powerful devotions.
Some of the topics that Hatmaker addresses throughout Out of the Spin Cycle include:
o Understanding that it’s healthy to ask for help
o Steering clear of the havoc of the “mom-comparison trap”
o Making time to feed yourself spiritually
o How to raise kids to reach an unsaved world
o Little acts of discipling our children
o Teaching our kids about Jesus and who he is
o The kind of discipline kids need
o The state of your marriage affects your children
Jen Hatmaker is the author of eight books and Bible studies, including A Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study. With a heart for the women of her generation, she speaks at retreats and conferences around the country. Jen and her husband, Brandon, reside in Texas with their three children, and lead the ministry work at Austin New Church. Find out more at www.jenhatmaker.com.

WHAT YOUR HUSBAND REALLY THINKS
ABOUT SEX AND MARRIAGE
This is one of my all time favorite books! Susie Davis is awesome in discussing how men actually think about the issues that for some reason don’t usually talk about. A breath of fresh air that enlightens a women to some of the ways real christian men think! The key here is “christian” men. Great job Susie this book rocks!
In Uncovered, author and radio talk-show host Susie Davis offers wives a vantage point into their marriage that they’ve never had before: through the eyes of their husbands.
“I want women to understand what their husbands are really thinking and begin to understand what he really needs from her,” Davis says. “When you read these authentic testimonies, where husbands share what’s really on their hearts about their marriages, you start to see your husband in a different light and revolutionize your marriage.”
That’s the premise she offers in her latest book, Uncovered: Revealing the Secrets of a Sexy Marriage, where she pinpoints how wives can cultivate closer relationships with their spouses and understand their husbands’ needs.
But Davis knew that what would make these concepts resonate with readers was to hear what real men had to say on the subjects, ranging from quality sex and intimacy to how often they’d like to hear encouragements from their wives. So she formed a focus group of husbands—from construction workers to CEOs and even pastors, who all who have been married for at least ten years in Christ-centered marriages—and gathered their honest responses on these subjects and more.
Bolstered with biblical wisdom, practical sense and a bit of feminine charm, Davis helps wives understand what their husbands really want out of their marriage and what matters most to them, ranging from sex to finances to having fun together.
Readers will learn to:
o Rediscover the “red hot mama” within herself and a sexy self-confidence about her body
o Understand the powerful influence she has over her man—to do good or harm
o Create a craving for sexual intimacy, even when life gets busy
o Guard against materialism and the burden it can put on a marriage
o Invite laughter and fun into your marriage, like when you were first dating
o Communicate with their husbands in new ways
o Discover the mission statement for their marriage
“What most often stands in the way of sexual intimacy with your wife?”
“How do you feel when your wife corrects you?”
“What causes the most financial stress in your marriage?”
Find out how real husbands answered these questions and more in Uncovered.
Susie Davis is the author of several books, including Parenting Your Teen and Loving It, and is a popular retreat and conference speaker. She is founder and director of Susie Davis Ministries (www.susiedavisministries.com) and has a passion for helping others develop God-centered relationships. With her husband, Will, she co-founded Austin Christian Fellowship in Austin, Texas, where he serves as senior pastor and she frequently teaches. They have three children.

A 40-Day Journey to Authentic Joy
Life Coach shares life-transforming habits and Biblical truths
to help readers rediscover contentment in their lives
I really enjoyed this book. It is not your usual “self help” book so to speak. We all know that we need more than self help to live life to the fullest! This book quotes scripture which enables the reader to feel the power and promises of God first hand, and then supports the scripture with some every day stuff that will change your life. I love, love, love this book!
Though they may not voice their frustrations aloud, many women are faced with the aching feeling that their lives have fallen short of their hopes and dreams. Instead of joy and celebration, they seem filled more with frustration and heartbreak. ‘What happened to my life?’ they ask with disappointment.
Danna Demetre, popular conference and motivational speaker, knows that this scenario is all too common in the lives of women today. Many are reeling from broken relationships, unfulfilling careers and other personal disappointments, leaving them feeling discontent and empty. That’s why Demetre, also an accomplished author, has released her latest book, What Happened to My Life?, where she helps readers discover authentic and lasting joy—despite the dispiriting circumstances they may face.
What Happened to My Life? is a 40-day journey that teaches readers a few simple yet transforming life habits that will help them discover the joy and passion that God has in store for their lives. With daily devotionals and thought-provoking questions, readers will learn to break the cycle of discontentment.
As readers work their way through Demetre’s 40-day
journey to joy, they will learn:
o How to fight discontentment in every situation
o What the Bible says about discontentment
o How to “walk in the Spirit” and rely on God’s strength for joy that will last
o How other women have changed their lives using these principles
Demetre invites women to “Join me on a journey to discover the one thing worth pursuing, to implement a few simple yet transforming life habits, and to realize the incredible life God has for those who love him.”
Whether dealing with a life crisis or simply feeling that life is not all they’d hoped for, readers will find that this new book will help them discover authentic contentment and joy, regardless of their circumstances. And it will help them transition from simply surviving to truly thriving once again.
Danna Demetre is an author and popular conference and retreat speaker. She is the president and founder of Women of Purpose, an evangelistic outreach ministry. Danna lives in San Diego, California, with her husband, Lew, and adopted 13 year-old grandson, Jesse. They also have three grown children and are expecting a new grandchild.

How Do You Tuck In a Superhero?
HILARIOUS DISPATCHES FROM A HOME FILLED WITH BOYS:
In a household with five young boys, you never know what to expect—except that it’s always an adventure!
This book will make you laugh out loud. I although in my family my daughter Kendra is more like her boys than my son Collin! I have quite the tomboy on my hands with her! Rachel reveals the all too real life of rasing children in a down to earth fun way that will leave you wanting more. I often wish that I would keep better track of some of what my children do because we soon forget these funny stories. This book is awesome because it is so real!
Author Rachel Balducci is no longer surprised when she has to say things in her house like: “I am not a wrestling mat.” “Stay off the roof.” “You can try to invent a jet-pack, but I will not buy the fuel for it.” Or, “Wear something nice—like a t-shirt with no stains on it.”
As the mother of five boys, Balducci has her hands full, which makes for some hilarious stories. She shares more than 50 of those tales–from finding her boys climbing through windows, making traps for catching bad guys or rooting through the refrigerator, ever hungry–in her delightful new book How Do You Tuck in a Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys.
Readers will laugh out loud at the antics she experiences on a daily basis, as she pulls back the curtain on what a life filled to the brim with boys is like for one woman. From the curious scenes she catches her boys in, to the entertaining conversations she overhears, to the unimaginable rules she’s been forced to make, this
laugh-out-loud celebration joyfully explores the sweet
and wild side of boyhood.
Rachel Balducci is a writer and the mother of five lively boys. Her website, www.testosterhome.net, has been nominated for several awards. Rachel is a former staff writer for the Augusta Chronicle and has been published in numerous magazines, including Good Housekeeping, Faith and Family, and The Word Among Us. The Shack is a book that everyone should read. I recently had a friend to read it and wrote about it on her Face Book page. This is what I wrote back to her.
OH MY GOSH!!! Loved this book! Those who read it and are confused about it, I recommend you read it like a parable that Jesus used to use to teach people with. It is a novel and not meant to have actual biblical facts to it, but meant to touch more on God’s perfect LOVE. Take it for what it’s worth and don’t try to over examine it. When you look at it as a parable it is much more fulfilling!
One thing that I have learned is that our Lord is a gentle and loving God. He meets you where you”re at and leads you from there. Just as in the book Mack was receptive to God when presented to him in the way that he did. If God would have presented himself as a huge, muscular man, Mack would have shut the whole experience out, because of the … See Morebaggage from his past. Everything in this world is based on perception and God is the only one who really knows how people will use information based on their own personal perception created from past experiences. This book created a scenario to show God’s great love and how gently he can move us through our pain by knowing the root of our pain. That is a true picture of our God and the love that he has for his people.

I am now homeschooling my two wonderful children. This was a choice that Kendall and I made together and are both so happy and excited with the results. Collin age 10 and Kendra soon to be 6 are doing better than ever, and are a lot healthier. I will be discussing some of our homeschooling adventures in the future.
I would like to say that one of the main reasons that I made this decision was the fact that I want my children to know their Christian heritage that should be taught to all children. God is the most important thing in our lives and we will not leave him out for anyone or anything. Now that I have said that I would like to share some information that was emailed to me earlier.
It is a matter of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.
He did this because he said in words to this effect:
‘Get it all on record now – get the films – get the witnesses -because somewhere down the road of history some evil person will get up and say that this never happened’
This week, the UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it ‘offends’ the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. It is not removed as yet.. However, this is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.
People we need to wake, up reunite and start standing up to let people know that we as Americans will not stand for some “Hitler wanna be” trying to say that something so horrific didn’t happen or that it offends some people, muslim or otherwise, so we shouldn’t talk about it. I’m sorry if it offends, but it did happen, and it should offend! I am horrified that such a thing could happen in this world and how dare anyone want to forget it. If we forget an event like this it will leave room for it to happen again.
God bless General Dwight Eisenhower for having the sense to see this coming and for taking such great measures to make sure that it was not forgotten. Lets make sure that history is taught the way it happened and not sugar coated as not to offend anyone. This is the most absurd thing that I have ever heard!

No I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth!! March was filled with lots of baby goats, the making of 1.5 gallons of Maple Syrup, and lots of preperation for the garden. April has been pretty busy too but things are now settled into a more reasonable daily routine, for the most part.
All of my pure Nubians were crossed with pure Boer this year. I must say that I have never seen such nice looking kids, and very healthy.
I have tried something new with the goats that has been working out very well for me. I kept all the babies on the does this year instead of pulling them all and bottle feeding. What a life saver this has been and healthier, happier, and dare I say smarter kids have emerged! This has made it easier for my schedule because I only milk once a day now, at least until I wean the kids off the does. I pin all the babies up at night in a pen beside the does. They have free choice hay and pellets in there so they are quite happy to be able to eat without competing with the bigger goats. They stay in there until after I do my morning milking and then I turn them loose to be with the does and they get the milk for the rest of the day. This has been an experiment for me that I think will become the new way of doing things! So far it has worked out well for all of us!

THE BEST THINGS YOU CAN DO TO BETTER YOUR MOOD:
From taking a nap to decorating your home,
authors share scientifically-sound secrets of what will make you feel great.
What does it take to be in a good mood—no matter what the weather’s like, how much cash you have in your wallet, or what
side of the bed you woke up on? As authors David B. Biebel, DMin; James E. Dill, MD; and Bobbie Dill, RN, have discovered: Happiness actually is pretty simple.
“We can have a much greater effect on our moods than many of us realize,” the authors say. “Just by doing one or two simple things each day, we can feel better and be less stressed.”
In their new book, 50 Ways to Feel Great Today, the credentialed authors offer sound medical and spiritual advice regarding 50 easy and practical things anyone can do to brighten their mood. Including scientific research, scriptural references and real-life anecdotes, they approach mental health and well-being from both a physical as well as an emotional perspective.
Some of the activities in the book include:
•Do something creative. It will stimulate your brain and increase memory function.
•Take a nap. A 20- to 30-minute break to snooze has been shown to increase work performance and alertness, relieve work-related stress and lower the risk of death from heart disease.
•Listen to music. Music can offer healing by helping us identify with our emotions. An upbeat rhythm has been proven to reduce stress hormones by as much as 41 percent.
•Decorate something. Our moods can be influenced by our immediate surroundings, so try bringing vibrant colors or meaningful objects into the rooms of your house.
•Offer a helping hand. Giving increases the release of endorphins (which causes a natural emotional “high”) and impacts the way you feel about yourself and the world around you. Studies have also found that volunteering can have a great impact on your health and longevity, even a 44% reduction in early death.
•Start lifting weights. Not only does it help you physically, but getting in shape also improves your sense of body image. In one study, lifting weights helped relieve chronic depression.
•Go fishing. It offers a chance to spend time outdoors, experience some adventure, or encourage quiet time and reflection.
•Remember the good times. Take 20 minutes to walk down memory lane, and your overall mood can be improved, one study recently shows. Consider journaling, scrapbooking or getting together with old friends.
•Have a sense of humor. Laughing has been shown to increase pain tolerance, reduce stress, increase your immunity, and burn calories.
•Make a nutritious meal. Healthy ingredients can boost your immune system, calm jangled nerves or even lessen aches, not to mention engage some creativity when trying out new recipes.
Although some of these activities seem like “no brainers” so to speak, they are common every day things that we over look each day. I think this book is like one of the treasured cookbooks that you can pull off the shelf and find a recipe for a great dish without running to the grocery store. Great ideas that anyone can use every day to make your life better and keep you smiling.
